This is an undated, English translation of an original 1786 French letter about the territory of Kentucky written by Otto (first name not given) to Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes (1719-1787). The letter was originally written March 11, 1786. It detailed "a considerable state in the vast forests of western Virginia," and described the land, crops, population, cities of Lexington and Louisville, and relations of white settlers with native Americans. The letter was copied from the Archives des Affaires Etrangers, Correspondance Politique, [Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Political Correspondence, volume 31, folio 173, of the Republic of France].

M. Otto was identified in G. Glenn Clift's GUIDE TO THE MANUSCRIPTS OF THE KENTUCKY HISTORICAL SOCIETY as Bodo Otto, charge d'affaires to the Comte de Vergennes.
